A woman of unextraordinary talents and means.
From the Foothills of the Slate Mountains
"See beyond sight; know beyond ken. Hear beyond what is said."
Sophia is a gentle, soft-spoken, elusive creature. She hails from Aldenard’s northern reach and is seldomly seen in public. Favouring the quiet comfort of her home or the thawed rural fields of Western Coerthas, she hosts small, private social gatherings for her local countryfolk and the odd visitor come from abroad. Little about her catches attention beyond her height—tall even among elezen—her pleasingly handsome face, and her piousness. The few who have met Miss Sophia claim that she is kindly but must not be very bright. Her efforts to make an impression are scarce at best, and she seems to pay little heed to the sensibilities that govern the upper echelons of society. Finishing school has carried her only so far in her manners, lacing her spine with all the aplomb and grace that runs in her veins yet lacking in certain areas where sufficiency is of import. Having never debuted, the woman is a spinster of many talents that shall die with her.

in the halls of the old manoir de caen
"If it's not too far, then you are welcome any time."
She seems hardly suited for working or worldly matters. It is almost for certain that an artless gaze such as hers can only be the result of many years spent sequestered away from life's trials, in the safety of familiar lands and people who are of course most well-meaning. Yes, her only reliable company since childhood must be that of parchment and books. Philosophical, amiable, she possesses a smile that says nothing is truly ugly because maybe she has never before laid eyes upon ugliness as blight or foul motive or violence. For this reason, her eldest brother the former-Dragoon Baron is, though not as much of his own wife, protective—even possessive of his youngest sibling. Fiends lurk in unexpected places, after all, and Miss Sophia remains a prized gem of the household. Her hands are strong like a gardener's, which surely explains the lush grounds of her family's estate, attended by her touch, reflecting the inner beauty of the Vremaix.
where coerthas is yet verdant in the west
“I have faith that Halone extends the long winter to teach.”
That being said, her family seems to have few expectations of her. Whatever Sophia does with her ample time—music, painting, and poetry, perhaps—remains an unexplored mystery of no particular interest to others. The Vremaix household has always prized discretion, anyway; where plenty of staff members employed by the elite chatter, the maids, butlers, and stable hands kept by the Vremaix are warm yet tight-lipped. It is enough to sate any outsider's curiosity that the family is full of busy men and women concerned with their people's welfare, keeping the vale in impeccable order. Though, perhaps to the Baron's frustration, his sister is not inclined to seriously consider any prospective suitors carefully sent her way. Even a promising potential match, such as the Viscount Thalemont Deafort of neighboring lands, struggles to hold her affections. While Sophia's business is her own, gil does not spring from the ground as flowers do.

Knight Dragoon • Aide-de-Camp • Dame of Turelia
Administrator for the Knights of the Ridge
Order of the Knights Dragoon
"In the quietude of gardens: a warrior's reward."
Ser Sophia de Vremaix is an aide-de-camp to Knight Commander Ignace Valtimo de Lothaire. A veteran member of Ishgard's Dragoons, Sophia serves among the Knights of the Ridge stationed along the Slate Mountains of Western Coerthas and the Smoldering Wastes of the Dravanian Forelands. Her official duties are administration, management, and overseeing training of the armed forces posted in the “Slate Vigil,” acting on behalf of the Knight Commander and with the counsel of Defense Staff and other Civil Service Members. Though hailing from a Reformationist family that acts as a staunch proponent of High House Haillenarte's motions (the Skysteel Manufactory, the Firmament, and the Diadem) as well as Old Sharlayan's contributions of moment (the Athenaeum Astrologicum et al.), she emphasizes the instruction of manual methods and technologies to ensure fitness and wilderness survival.

Vassal to the High House Durendaire
"Our charge is no different than that of yesteryear."
Her career is an accomplished one—though easily overshadowed by that of her decorated brother. Perhaps this is why so few apart from the rank and file know of “Lady Sophia” by her martial education or her battlefield merits, much less her station and other titles. With her foundational training completed as a page and her proficiency acquired as a squire halberdier under the late-Baron de Lusignan, Sophia dedicates herself to Ishgard among its many commissioned officers. Certified through a formal program in Saint Endalim’s Scholasticate for mechanical engineering, siegecraft, and military leadership, she is in her 14th year of active service with the Order of the Knights Dragoon, distinguished since the age of 18 summers for felling the dangerous falak Seskef during the Dragonsong War. She is frequently attending to her hometown security, away on assignment with her contingent, or bound to paperwork at the Knight Commander’s behest.
aide-de-camp to the Knight Commander
"Ever in service are we. I shall be glad to be of use."
As Ishgard's definitions of heresy and the list of enemies to the nation both narrow, Sophia finds herself gradually relegated to more and more responsibilities best tended to from a seat behind her desk. The Knights of the Ridge are a non-traditional contingent, once forming urgent border defense along the western front of Ishgardian territory. Now, they are loosely organized. One force is dedicated to overseeing passage between Dravania and Coerthas. The rest pursue the interests of nascent peace between dragons and mankind through the operations of individual chapters of knights. No longer required upon the field of battle as much as she was when the war yet raged, Sophia is of all things happy to assume a quiet post that is mostly obscure. Her day to day duties are to review reports, brief and debrief knights from their assignments, and on occasion join her peers, traversing the mountain range and even realms abroad for missions.

In recognition of her service to the Order of the Knights Dragoon and her camaraderie with the Congregation of Our Knights Most Heavenly, the Holy See delivers adoubement to the accolade, Sophia de Vremaix, on this day the 2nd Sun of the 6th Umbral Moon, 3rd Year of the 7th U.E., and hereby confers knighthood with the blessing of Halone the Fury. Rise, Knight Dragoon Ser Sophia de Vremaix, with the Goddess's grace.
active service member of Ishgard
"... betwixt levin and thunder, acuminate as rain from the nimbus diving..." — A Minstrel's Tale
Sophia earned her position as First Lieutenant among the Order of the Knights Dragoon by demonstrating the qualities of a fierce combatant in tandem with the acuity expected of Ishgard’s commissioned officers. Although the reputation of a Vremaix family scion rising in prominence as a prodigious fighter and one of the youngest squires to fell a dragon goes to her eldest brother Pascal, who has since retired from the field, Sophia is not without achievements of her own. Among minstrel ballads that recall the deeds of certain knights is a lesser known tale, The Lady of the Silent Lance. Its verses describe Ser Sophia for her deadly accuracy in the sky, striking silently with such great speed and strength that not even the falak Seskef, who slew dozens of other knights, can retaliate using his lightning. She is illustrated as a droplet of rain, soft of heart with steel in hand, piercing the vitals in such a way that grants instant peaceful death to her foe.

of those souls from the Dragonsong War
"Theirs is a memory far greater than our own. How soon shall we forget without them?"
Having slain numerous Dravanians and survived the cruelties exacted by their ilk, Sophia is not precisely a friend to dragons. Her acceptance of mankind’s treachery rests independent from her stance toward Hraesvelgr, his Dravanian Horde, as well as whatever remains of Nidhogg’s brood and the heretical factions yet at large. The notion that other siblings of the First Brood, Vrtra and Azdaja, are revered leaders in the prosperous trade city of Radz-at-Han is a concept that she continues to grapple with. So, she looks eastward for what harmony between dragons and mankind in Aldenard might become. She does not admit it often, but tidings from the Bounty strongly influence how she tends to her post in the Château de l’Ardoise. With millennium-old enemies as new allies in crucial roles for Ishgard’s reforming systems, Sophia continues the work where catacombs of yore run deep, praying they shall one day serve as tombs for hatchets too.

The depths of Château de l'Ardoise rest sealed behind an ancient gate called the Eye of the Fury; it is carved out of solid slate chiseled into the mountainside and imbued by Theomancers of eld with vivimancy spellcraft. Of all peoples in Coerthas, only the Lord Commander of the Congregation, his Second-in-Command of the Temple Knights, and the Knight Commander of the Ridge are able to journey past this fearsome arch.
